Veneers Q&A

What are veneers?

Veneers are paper-thin shells of porcelain bonded to your natural teeth. They mask minor oral imperfections and make your smile appear more balanced.

If you chip a tooth, you might benefit from a single veneer, but Dr. Luong usually recommends getting between six and eight to ensure proper symmetry.

What types of issues can veneers treat?

Dr. Luong uses veneers to cover various minor oral imperfections, including:

  • Stains and discoloration
  • Chips and fractures
  • Smaller-than-average teeth
  • Pointy teeth
  • Unusually shaped teeth

You might also benefit from treatment with veneers if you have visible spaces between two or more teeth.

What does getting veneers involve?

Getting veneers takes two appointments about a week apart.

First appointment

Before recommending veneers, Dr. Luong conducts an oral exam and takes oral X-rays. Afterward, he reviews your dental health history and asks about your goals for treatment, including the imperfections you’d like to address.

After gathering the necessary information, Dr. Luong administers a local anesthetic. Then, he prepares your teeth to receive the veneers by removing a thin layer of enamel from each tooth. Next, Dr. Luong takes impressions of your teeth and sends them to a dental laboratory.

The technicians at the dental lab use your impressions to design and manufacture a set of custom veneers.

Second appointment

About a week later, when the laboratory completes your veneers, you return to the office. Dr. Luong administers a local anesthetic, bonds the veneers to your natural teeth, and polishes them. He then provides care instructions.

How long do veneers last?

On average, veneers last between 12-15* months, but it’s possible to extend their lifespan by practicing good oral hygiene. Dr. Luong recommends brushing and flossing daily and visiting the office every six months for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.

To prevent damage to your veneers, avoid bad habits like biting your nails, opening packaging with your teeth, or biting down on hard objects like ice cubes. If you play contact sports or grind your teeth, wear a mouthguard.
